Exodus
Chapter 20

1
1 Then God delivered all these commandments:
2
"I, the LORD, am your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery.
3
You shall not have other gods besides me.
4
You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything in the sky above or on the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth;
5
2 you shall not bow down before them or worship them. For I, the LORD, your God, am a jealous God, inflicting punishment for their fathers' wickedness on the children of those who hate me, down to the third and fourth generation;
6
but bestowing mercy down to the thousandth generation, on the children of those who love me and keep my commandments.
7
"You shall not take the name of the LORD, your God, in vain. For the LORD will not leave unpunished him who takes his name in vain.
8
"Remember to keep holy the sabbath day.
9
Six days you may labor and do all your work,
10
but the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD, your God. No work may be done then either by you, or your son or daughter, or your male or female slave, or your beast, or by the alien who lives with you.
11
In six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the LORD has blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.
12
"Honor your father and your mother, that you may have a long life in the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you.
13
"You shall not kill.
14
"You shall not commit adultery.
15
"You shall not steal.
16
"You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
17
"You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male or female slave, nor his ox or ass, nor anything else that belongs to him."

*****************************

The Ten Commandments are precepts bearing on the fundamental obligations of religion and morality and embodying the revealed expression of the Creator's will in relation to man's whole duty to God and to his fellow-creatures. Written by the finger of God on two tables of stone, this Divine code was received from the Almighty by Moses amid the thunders of Mount Sinai, and by him made the ground-work of the Mosaic Law.

Christ resumed these Commandments in the double precept of charity--love of God and of the neighbour; He proclaimed them as binding under the New Law in Matthew 19 and in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5). He also simplified or interpreted them, e.g. by declaring unnecessary oaths equally unlawful with false, by condemning hatred and calumny as well as murder, by enjoining even love of enemies, and by condemning indulgence of evil desires as fraught with the same malice as adultery (Matthew 5).

The Church, on the other hand, after changing the day of rest from the Jewish Sabbath, or seventh day of the week, to the first, made the Third Commandment refer to Sunday as the day to be kept holy as the Lord's Day. The Council of Trent (Sess. VI, can. xix) condemns those who deny that the Ten Commandments are binding on Christians.

there is no numerical division of the Commandments in the Books of Moses, but the injunctions are distinctly tenfold, and are found almost identical in both sources. The order, too, is the same except for the final prohibitions pronounced against concupiscence, that of Deuteronomy being adopted in preference to Exodus. A confusion, however, exists in the numbering, which is due to a difference of opinion concerning the initial precept on Divine worship.

anyway, i am not going to touch on the biblical issue.

what is this all about?

2 nights ago, i had a disturbing conversation with Benny.

B: V, will you date a married guy? he's not divorced but his marriage is on the rocks.

V: no. definitely not.

B: why?

V: coz i'll be offending Exodus 20:17. "..... wil not covet my neighbour's wife / husband..."

B: how sure are you? can you vouch on it?

V: definitely. i swear my life upon it. i do not take my Lord's name in vain. (Exodus 20:7)

B: V... you're young and naive. don't give me the commandment S*** when you've not yet stepped into the society or even met the right one. when the time comes, we'll see whether you'll stick to your commandments.

V: my family will object it anyway. they won't accept me committing adultery. my family comes first.

B: so what if he loves you alot and you love him alot too?

V: i'll just leave him before it all starts.

B: i have no qualms dating a married woman though.

well.... for those who know me, you know that i am not a super-zealous, traditional conservative Catholic. but i do have my moral principles that's based on my religion. i enjoy living my live in accordance to The Commandments. i enjoy basking in God's love. i see no problem in it. no men's love is greater than God's. i am happy with what i am doing.

if Benny wants to have an affair with a married woman, then go ahead.
i will not speak evil of him.
but to me, that's an offense against morality.
when someone's marriage is on the rocks, i think he should go for counselling with his wife, attend marriage therapy and matrimonial vow renewal. however do not escape to someone else's abode.
if i enter the picutre, i inevitably will become the third party in a relationship and/or marriage that could have been saved.

to avoid the the dilema of i-love-him, he-loves-me but he's married saga.
the easiest and surest way is to not even be tempted by it.
you cannot avoid being tempted. even Jesus Christ was tempted.
but you can resist temptation by knowing when and where to circumvent its lurking presence.

let me live my life worshipping God, trying my best to be Christ-like in my habits.
encourage me to remember the Holy Scriptures and practice them in my days.
do not hurl abuses at my God or my religion, i feel hurt.

but i know that as a christian and/or catholic, we are carrying our life-crosses.
we will be insulted, doubted, persecuted etc for our faith.
it is a test. Jesus was crucified under Pontius Pilate.
he carried the Cross while being nailed to it.
i have faith and hope. an eternal faith that will carry me through.
judge me and i will not cry. abandon me and i know i won't be lost.
